Chris Smiley is embracing the opportunity to represent Northern Ireland on the national stage as the only driver from the region competing in the 2025 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). With former BTCC regulars Colin Turkington and Andrew Watson no longer on the grid, Smiley is carrying the torch solo this season.
Despite the added visibility, the Carrickfergus native isn’t letting the spotlight weigh on him. He says the absence of fellow countrymen doesn’t create pressure but rather fuels his motivation to perform well and make Northern Ireland proud. “It's nice to represent Northern Ireland and I don’t feel any extra pressure doing that,” Smiley explained, noting that racing is ultimately about delivering results regardless of who’s watching.
Smiley returned to the BTCC this year after competing in the TCR UK Championship, where he won the title in 2022. Now back in Britain’s top touring car series with Restart Racing, he’s driving a Cupra Leon and already showing strong form. At the opening round in Donington Park, Smiley secured two wins in the Independent class and a top-ten overall finish, signalling a competitive start to the campaign.
Reflecting on his path to this point, Smiley acknowledged the hard work and persistence it’s taken to reach and stay at the highest level of touring car racing. He remains grateful for the continued support from fans back home and is hopeful that his success can inspire the next generation of Northern Irish motorsport talent.
Looking ahead, Smiley is focused on consistency and building momentum across the season. His aim is not just to compete, but to challenge for honours in the Independent standings and represent Northern Ireland with pride in every race.
