After two punishing stages in persistent rain near Dungannon, Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin lead the Circuit of Ireland Rally in their Citroën C3 Rally2. From the outset, they looked in control, setting the fastest time on both stages despite incredibly tricky conditions. Their confident pace sees them end the day with a 9.8-second lead over their nearest rivals.
That challenge is coming from Callum Devine and Noel O’Sullivan in the Škoda Fabia RS Rally2, who kept the pressure on throughout the opening loop. They were just 0.6 seconds slower than Cronin on the second test and remain firmly in contention heading into day two.
Matt Edwards and David Moynihan, running as top seeds in the Hyundai i20 N Rally2, sit third overall, 15.9 seconds off the lead. While not quite on the pace of the leading duo, their consistency through the wet has kept them within striking distance.
Josh Moffett and Andy Hayes made steady gains to move into fourth, with Cathan McCourt and Barry McNulty rounding out the top five. Both crews will be aiming to close the gap with more dry running expected tomorrow.
Eddie Doherty and Tom Murphy posted a strong time on Stage 2, but now lie sixth overall. Meanwhile, James Ford and Neil Shanks, who were third after the opening stage, lost time in the second and dropped to seventh.
Declan Boyle remains the leading Donegal driver in eighth, putting in a solid showing in the Fabia RS Rally2. David Kelly (ninth) and Michael Boyle (just outside the top ten) also flew the flag for the northwest, while Garry Jennings and Rory Kennedy, after a time-consuming issue on Stage 1, are 15th overall. With the rain expected to ease but more technical stages ahead, day two promises plenty more action as the battle at the top heats up. Cronin holds the advantage for now, but with several quick crews in pursuit, nothing is settled yet.
