I’ve been crunching some numbers lately on the current cost of engine rebuilds vs. the actual market value of 2015-2018 era cars. With the current shortage of specialized technicians in our region, a simple "Sell my car with engine problems Yorkshire" search is becoming the reality for more people than expected.

I’m part of the team at UKMotorBuyers, and we’ve seen that for many owners, the £2,500+ garage bill just doesn't align with the car's £4,000 "running" value.

Does anyone here have a "tipping point" for when they decide a car is no longer worth the investment? I'm interested to hear how other Yorkshire owners are balancing the rising cost of maintenance against the current high demand for salvage parts.

I think it really depends on the overall condition of the car rather than just the repair bill.

If the bodywork is solid, the gearbox is healthy, and the car has been well maintained, I'd probably spend £2,500 on an engine repair rather than take on the cost and uncertainty of replacing it with another used car. At least you know the history of your own vehicle.

That said, once the repair estimate starts getting close to 60–70% of the car's value, I begin looking at other options. If there are also suspension, gearbox, or electrical issues on the horizon, it often makes more financial sense to move it on.

The used car market is still unpredictable, so there's no one-size-fits-all answer. For me, it's about the total ownership cost over the next few years, not just the size of the repair invoice.
