The FIA’s new ban on swearing has sparked controversy in the WRC paddock, with several drivers openly pushing back against the ruling during the Safari Rally Kenya. The regulation, introduced as part of a push for more professional conduct in motorsport, has not gone down well with some of the sport’s biggest names.
Many WRC drivers, including high-profile competitors, have found creative ways to express their frustration. Some have joked about the ban in interviews, while others have taken a more direct approach by testing the limits of what they can say.
One of the key concerns among drivers is that rallying is an intense and emotional sport, where reactions in the heat of the moment are natural. The unpredictable nature of the WRC, with rough terrain, mechanical failures, and high-stakes competition, often leads to strong language—something many feel should not be policed so strictly.
The FIA introduced the rule to maintain professionalism in broadcasted media and ensure the sport remains family-friendly. However, critics argue that rallying is a raw and passionate discipline, and policing language to this extent might be unnecessary.
While the FIA has yet to enforce any penalties, the strong reaction from drivers suggests this could become a bigger talking point as the season progresses. Will they continue to protest, or will the FIA need to adjust its stance?
What do you think? Should drivers be allowed to express themselves freely, or is the FIA right to introduce a swearing ban? Drop your thoughts below! 👇🔥
