Are tinted number plates legal in Northern Ireland?

For modern vehicles, the front background must be white and the rear yellow, with black characters and no background pattern. The plate must remain readily legible and meet the applicable British Standard.

Dark covers, smoked acrylic or films can reduce contrast or reflectivity and can make the registration harder for people or cameras to read. DfI treats obscured or poorly legible plates as MOT defects.

If a “tinted” product changes the required appearance or visibility, calling it a show plate does not make it lawful for road use.

“Road legal” advertising is not a substitute for the regulations or NI inspection manual. Styling terms such as 3D, 4D, gel, smoked or shortened describe products, not legal exemptions. The decisive questions are whether the plate uses the required material, colours, font, character construction, spacing and margins, and whether the true registration remains immediately legible. The direct operational effect is that no ordinary tinted or smoked plate should be used if the tint stops the plate meeting the required reflective, colour and legibility standards. This is one of the areas where the jurisdiction and the exact status of the driver or vehicle matter more than a general UK rule.
