Can a Northern Ireland registration number be transferred to a GB vehicle?

DVLA now administers vehicle registration for the whole UK, including NI registrations. A qualifying registration can therefore move between eligible UK vehicles, provided the mark itself is transferable and the receiving vehicle meets the assignment conditions.

The receiving vehicle must be registered with DVLA, capable of moving under its own power, of a type that needs an MOT/HGV test and available for inspection. Tax/SORN history and current status conditions also apply.

An NI mark does not make a GB vehicle “NI registered” for residence or tax purposes; it is simply the registration number displayed on the DVLA vehicle record.

For NI motorists it helps to separate the registration number from the physical number plate. DVLA controls the legal registration entitlement and transfers; DfI/DVA applies NI vehicle-test standards to the plate that is actually fitted. Owning a V750 or V778 does not let you display the mark until it has been assigned, while a correctly assigned mark can still be illegal if the acrylic plate is wrongly spaced, obscured or made to the wrong specification. For the driver or keeper, this means yes, an eligible Northern Ireland registration can generally be assigned to an eligible GB-registered vehicle through the DVLA personalised-registration system. Where dates, categories or vehicle status matter, keep the original paperwork because those details can change the result.
