Can I drive in Northern Ireland on a Great Britain driving licence after moving here?

A Great Britain licence does not suddenly stop working because you become resident in Northern Ireland. nidirect says holders of an ordinary GB licence can drive in NI for the period for which the licence was issued, provided the entitlement itself is valid and you are not otherwise disqualified.

You may still choose to exchange it for a Northern Ireland licence so your licensing record and address are held by DVA. That can be useful once NI becomes your permanent home. Different time limits can apply to vocational lorry, bus or minibus entitlements, so do not apply the ordinary car rule to commercial categories.

If the GB licence was itself issued in exchange for an overseas licence, the underlying licence history can affect exchange rights. Keep the GB licence, any entitlement evidence and your NI address details available if DVA asks how the entitlement was obtained.

A useful NI distinction is between the right to drive on the existing licence and the right to exchange it. They are related but not identical. DVA can allow a licence to remain usable for a period even where the eventual exchange has separate deadlines, evidence requirements or category limits. That is especially important for vocational, motorcycle and licences that were originally obtained by exchanging another country’s entitlement. Applied to the actual NI case, yes.
