Can I transfer a registration from a car with no MOT in Northern Ireland?

To assign a private number, DVLA requires the vehicle to be of a type that needs an MOT/HGV test, able to move under its own power and available for inspection. For a vehicle on long-term SORN, an MOT may be required before assignment even where the vehicle has otherwise been off road.

Taking a private number off a vehicle also has eligibility conditions. Do not assume that an expired MOT is irrelevant simply because you are only moving a registration mark.

For NI motorists it helps to separate the registration number from the physical number plate.
