Does an imported car need an MOT before it can be registered in Northern Ireland?

DVLA requires imported vehicles to have acceptable vehicle approval evidence before registration where approval is required. DVA’s NI MOT system separately tests roadworthiness, and vehicles not previously registered or tested in NI can be added for testing when due.

An IVA inspection is not the same as an MOT. A car can satisfy one and still need the other because IVA looks at construction/type-approval compliance while MOT checks roadworthiness items.

Check the vehicle’s first-use date and whether it already has recognised UK/EU approval before booking tests. Do not assume every import must take IVA and MOT on the same day.

An NI vehicle import normally has four separate tracks: customs/VAT with HMRC, construction or type approval, DVLA registration/tax, and DVA roadworthiness testing. Completing one does not automatically complete the others. A NOVA reference is not an MOT; an MOT is not type approval; and an IVA certificate does not itself register or tax the vehicle. The direct operational effect is that not always. Registration, type approval and MOT are separate requirements; whether an imported car needs an NI MOT before registration depends on its age, approval status and registration circumstances. This is one of the areas where the jurisdiction and the exact status of the driver or vehicle matter more than a general UK rule.
