How long can I keep a Northern Ireland vehicle registration number on retention?

DVLA no longer treats retention as a short one-year holding period. The retention document proves the right to assign the number during the stated 10-year period.

Keep the document and online reference secure. Do not post scans publicly or send an unredacted copy to strangers, because the details can be used to assign the mark.

If you still want the number near the expiry date, renew the entitlement in time rather than assuming an unused mark remains yours indefinitely.

For NI motorists it helps to separate the registration number from the physical number plate. DVLA controls the legal registration entitlement and transfers; DfI/DVA applies NI vehicle-test standards to the plate that is actually fitted. Owning a V750 or V778 does not let you display the mark until it has been assigned, while a correctly assigned mark can still be illegal if the acrylic plate is wrongly spaced, obscured or made to the wrong specification. When applying the rule, the outcome is that a retained private registration is normally protected for 10 years at a time under the V778/V750 entitlement, and the right can be renewed before expiry. That prevents a rule written for Great Britain or the Republic of Ireland being applied automatically to a Northern Ireland case.
