What documents are needed to register an imported car in Northern Ireland?

DVLA can ask for the original foreign registration certificate and evidence of the vehicle’s age and approval. If the vehicle lacks recognised type approval, DVA Individual Vehicle Approval or another approval route may be needed before registration.

HMRC documentation is separate from vehicle approval: NOVA and tax/customs evidence show the fiscal side is settled, while approval shows the vehicle meets the relevant safety/environmental construction standards.

If the VIN, name, purchase details or foreign documents do not agree, resolve that before sending the registration application because mismatches can trigger inspection or rejection.

An NI vehicle import normally has four separate tracks: customs/VAT with HMRC, construction or type approval, DVLA registration/tax, and DVA roadworthiness testing. Completing one does not automatically complete the others. A NOVA reference is not an MOT; an MOT is not type approval; and an IVA certificate does not itself register or tax the vehicle.
