What happens if I request a court hearing for a fixed penalty in Northern Ireland?

PSNI says that for endorsable notices a person who opts for court will receive a summons giving the hearing date and time. The court can consider evidence and mitigation under its normal powers.

If convicted, the outcome can be more severe than the original fixed penalty because the court is not restricted to the conditional offer. If acquitted, the fixed penalty does not simply remain payable as though no hearing occurred.

Keep all paperwork, note deadlines and obtain advice where the offence is serious or could lead to disqualification. A court election is a formal legal step, not an extended informal appeal.

Police fixed penalties and camera notices are not private debts. Read the response deadline carefully, comply with any separate legal requirement to identify the driver, and use the court-hearing route if you genuinely dispute an allegation that cannot be resolved administratively.
