What happens to a private registration assigned to a Northern Ireland vehicle that is stolen and not recovered?

DVLA says the number can be recovered if the theft was reported to police and the vehicle had valid tax and MOT when stolen. You must apply within two years and six months of notifying DVLA of the theft.
