What number plate format is used for vehicles registered in Northern Ireland?

UK registration-display regulations expressly recognise formats issued only in Northern Ireland, such as a group of three letters followed by four numbers or the reversed form. NI marks commonly contain the letters I or Z as part of the regional series and do not encode the vehicle’s age in the way a modern GB “25/75” style mark does.

The registration mark and the physical plate are separate issues: whatever NI mark is assigned, the plate still has to meet the legal display, colour, font and spacing rules applicable to that vehicle.
