A4 Annaghilla Road closures: full October diversion timetable for drivers
DfI has confirmed an intricate sequence of closures on the A4 near Augher from 17 October, with separate local and HGV detours.
One of the largest new October roadworks programmes
A £1.4 million resurfacing project will begin on the A4 Annaghilla Road near Augher on Saturday 17 October 2026. The Department for Infrastructure says the works extend approximately 4.35 kilometres between Feddan Road and the west junction of Annaloughan Road. The road is part of the trunk route between Ballygawley and Augher.
The important news for drivers is not only the investment figure. The works require a westbound lane closure, a separate road closure, a weekend-wide closure and temporary speed limits extending into November. Different diversions apply depending on the direction of travel and vehicle type.
17–24 October: westbound lane and adjacent closure
From 5am on Saturday 17 October to 5am on Saturday 24 October, the A4 Annaghilla Road westbound lane is due to close from Feddan Road to the east junction of Annaghilla Road. DfI lists the westbound diversion via the A5 Tullyvar Road, B128 Favour Royal Road and B128 Main Street, Augher.
Over the same period, the section of A4 between the east and west junctions of Annaghilla Road is scheduled for a full road closure. Eastbound traffic is diverted via the C0651 Annaghilla Road; westbound vehicles follow the A5 Tullyvar Road, Favour Royal Road and Main Street route. Distinguishing these adjacent restrictions is essential: there is not one identical diversion for both directions.
24–26 October: a full weekend closure
A wider A4 closure is scheduled from 5am Saturday 24 October to 6am Monday 26 October, covering Feddan Road to the west junction of Annaloughan Road. For ordinary traffic the Department lists A5 Tullyvar Road, B128 Favour Royal Road and B128 Main Street, Augher, with the corresponding reverse direction for eastbound journeys.
Heavy goods vehicles are assigned a notably longer alternative: A5 from Ballygawley to Omagh, A32 through Dromore and Irvinestown towards Enniskillen, and vice versa. Drivers of large commercial vehicles should not use the local-car diversion simply because it appears shorter on a navigation screen. DfI specifies the HGV route separately.
Temporary speed limits until 16 November
A temporary 40mph speed limit applies on A4 Annaghilla Road between the west junction of Annaloughan Road and Feddan Road, and along the entire C0651 Annaghilla Road, from 17 October to 16 November 2026.
A different temporary 50mph restriction applies on the A4 dual carriageway for approximately one mile east of the new A5 Ballygawley roundabout up to the roundabout, during the same dates. These are temporary roadworks restrictions. They should not be confused with permanent speed-limit orders affecting other roads in Northern Ireland.
After 26 October: more closures may be announced
DfI says further overnight and weekend closures may be published through TrafficwatchNI for the week starting Monday 26 October onwards, depending on weather. That means the initial press release does not provide a final hour-by-hour schedule for the whole remaining project.
The authority also says affected roads will remain closed overnight during the stated closure periods. This matters for shift workers and cross-country trips: a closure continuing until 5am or 6am is not necessarily lifted after the daytime works crew finishes.
Why this affects more than Augher
The A4 is a strategic connection and rerouting traffic onto the A5 and B128 can alter journeys beyond the immediate roadwork site. The separate HGV route via Omagh, Dromore and Irvinestown underlines the importance of checking vehicle suitability rather than assuming a nearby lane will carry every type of traffic.
The Department has not issued authoritative journey-time increases or traffic forecasts in its announcement. Consequently PureCar cannot fairly claim a specific number of additional minutes. The degree of disruption will depend on departure time, route, weather and how many drivers encounter each staged closure.
When will the road reopen?
DfI expects the resurfacing scheme to be substantially complete by 16 November 2026, subject to favourable weather. That target is not a guarantee of unobstructed travel on every date before then. The announcement calls for motorists to obey signed diversions and allow additional time.
Before setting off, check the latest TrafficwatchNI notice and roadside signs, especially if travelling on 17, 24 or 26 October or at night. The source is the official DfI announcement of 12 October 2026, and this article should be updated if additional closures are subsequently confirmed.
