Belfast Dock Street roadworks: six overnight closures from 18 October

New £350,000 A2 Dock Street and York Street works bring six planned overnight traffic restrictions in north Belfast between 18 and 25 October.

A newly announced £350,000 resurfacing programme will affect one of north Belfast’s key routes later this month, with six separate overnight traffic arrangements scheduled around Dock Street, York Street and Brougham Street. The Department for Infrastructure announced the work on 15 October and says it will begin on Sunday 18 October 2026.

The work is more complex than a single road closure. The direction of the York Street restriction changes on some nights, the time at which the country-bound road closes varies, and the final scheduled closure runs into late Sunday morning. Drivers should look at the actual night they intend to travel rather than assume the same arrangement applies throughout the programme.

Where the £350,000 scheme will take place

The Department says the resurfacing includes about 100 metres of the A2 from Brougham Street through the Dock Street junction towards Garmoyle Street. It also covers around 150 metres of York Street, between the entrance to the Cityside shopping complex and the Dock Street junction. These are short lengths of road but sit on a busy urban corridor, where junction restrictions may have consequences beyond the immediate work site.

This scheme is a new announcement and should not be confused with the separate York Street resurfacing programme announced in September. Anyone reading older closure notices should check the scheme name and current dates carefully.

Full published overnight schedule

  • Sunday 18 October, 9pm to Monday 19 October, 6am: York Street closed city-bound, Brougham Street closed towards Dock Street, and Dock Street closed. York Street also closes country-bound from 11pm.
  • Monday 19 October, 9pm to 11pm: lane closures country-bound on York Street beside Cityside. From 11pm to 6am Tuesday 20 October, a full closure operates on that section, including Brougham Street.
  • Tuesday 20 October, 9pm to Wednesday 21 October, 6am: York Street closed city-bound and Dock Street closed.
  • Wednesday 21 October, 9pm to Thursday 22 October, 6am: York Street closed city-bound, Brougham Street closed towards Dock Street and Dock Street fully closed. York Street closes country-bound from 11pm.
  • Thursday 22 October, 9pm to 11pm: country-bound lane closures on York Street beside Cityside. From 11pm until 6am Friday 23 October, a full closure of that section and Brougham Street applies.
  • Saturday 24 October, 9pm to Sunday 25 October, 11am: York Street closed city-bound and Dock Street closed.

What the closures mean for local journeys

The scheme may affect motorists travelling between Belfast city centre, north Belfast and routes connecting towards the docks. Taxi drivers, delivery operators and people collecting passengers at night should pay particular attention because some restrictions begin after normal shopping hours. A route that is open at 9.30pm may be closed at 11.30pm.

The Department says clearly signed diversions will operate when roads are closed. Its announcement does not provide one permanent diversion covering every individual phase, so it would be misleading to publish an invented shortcut. Follow the signed route on the night and use TrafficwatchNI for current restrictions.

Will there be daytime disruption?

Yes, potentially. The Department says off-peak lane closures may also be used on Dock Street and York Street throughout the scheme. The night-time programme therefore does not guarantee unrestricted movement during every daytime period. Local access is being considered, but motorists have been advised to expect delays and follow temporary signs.

Subject to weather, the Department expects the work to be completed by Friday 30 October 2026. That is a forecast rather than confirmation that the full route will definitely be clear on that date. If a journey is time-critical, check the latest official traffic information shortly before leaving.

PureCar perspective

For readers, the key distinction is between the short resurfacing distance and the much wider practical effect of closing a connected junction. A small section of fresh road surface can require a significant traffic-management operation. Keeping the dates and directions in one place should help drivers plan without treating a week of restrictions as one continuous closure.
