Dan Harper and Darren Leung finish third at Silverstone 500 after dominating opening hours

Dan Harper and Darren Leung looked set to win the 2026 British GT Silverstone 500 before safety-car timing and pit-stop strategy turned their lead into third place. The Paradine BMW M4 GT3 Evo crew controlled much of the three-hour race on 26 April, starting from pole and holding the front for approximately two and a half hours. Optimum Motorsport's Yasser Shahin and Garnet Patterson eventually won in a McLaren, while Century Motorsport's Jonathon Beeson and Charles Clark placed second in another BMW. The Northern Irishman's team finished six seconds behind the winners despite having shown the strongest early pace.

The race slipped away through strategy

Leung took the early lead after a restart and built an advantage, helped by rivals encountering problems. Harper joined the race through the required driver changes and the BMW remained a leading contender deep into the final hour. The turning point was not a documented spin or major collision by the Paradine pairing. Instead, Optimum adopted a pit-stop sequence that made it possible to complete its final mandatory change during a timely safety-car period. The neutralisation saved the McLaren substantial relative time.

With approximately forty minutes left, Leung handed over to Harper while the team knew the strategically placed McLaren stop had changed the order. A further safety car benefited Century's BMW, allowing it to rejoin ahead of Harper as another contender went off. The final leading pair finished only about 1.4 seconds apart, with Harper and Leung third. The official timing records 71 laps for the class leader and a winning race duration around three hours. This account is more faithful to the event than saying Harper 'lost the lead because of lack of pace'.

A title favourite still on the podium

The 2026 Silverstone 500 was the British GT season opener, giving third place immediate championship relevance for entered full-season competitors. Harper and Leung were returning to a circuit where they had previously won a major endurance race together. They were British GT champions in 2023, so expectations were understandably high. Their 2026 result showed competitive raw speed, yet also the limits of that speed when neutralisations and mandatory driver-change windows alter the effective race order.

The leading cars represented contrasting approaches. The Paradine BMW was fast enough to lead for most of the event, while Optimum's McLaren won through a combination of competitive driving and an unusually successful strategic gamble. Century's BMW secured second with another pit-stop window made favourable by the field running behind a safety car. None of this makes the declared result controversial. The race's rules permitted those stops, and the teams had to react to the timing of on-track incidents.

Northern Ireland's other British GT connection

The same Silverstone meeting also marked Colin Turkington's British GT debut in a WSR FlexiFly BMW M4 GT4 Evo, shared with Ernie Graham. That entry competed in GT4, a separate class from Harper's GT3 BMW. Turkington and Graham overcame a drive-through penalty to finish on a Pro-Am class podium. The other BMW competed as a separate entry with its own result, distinct from Harper and Leung's third-place finish.
