Fionn McLaughlin scores first FIA Formula 3 championship points at Silverstone
Northern Ireland teenager Fionn McLaughlin scored his first FIA Formula 3 Championship points during the Silverstone Sprint race on 4 July 2026, finishing ninth for Hitech. The result came in his rookie season of international single-seater competition after success in British Formula 4. American driver Ugo Ugochukwu won the Sprint for Campos Racing, with Yevan David second and Théophile Naël third. McLaughlin was not on the podium, but a top-ten points finish represented a tangible step into the more competitive F3 field.
Qualifying put the pace into context
McLaughlin had qualified sixth at Silverstone with a lap of 1 minute 45.933 seconds, only 0.313 seconds off Freddie Slater's pole time of 1 minute 45.620 seconds. Those figures show that he was not merely accumulating points by staying on the circuit while others retired. He had already demonstrated pace across one lap, placing himself near the leading group. The Sprint then produced a ninth-place classification, which was enough for his first championship score.
Ugochukwu controlled the race at the front, eventually finishing about 17 seconds ahead of David. The size of that victory means ninth place should not be framed as if McLaughlin narrowly missed an outright win. The teenager was operating in another portion of the order, competing to convert his qualifying speed and starting circumstances into an actual result. In junior single-seaters, extracting points from a difficult midfield contest can be important to a developing career even when the television attention is focused on the leader.
The step from British F4
McLaughlin's rise followed a strong British F4 campaign in 2025. He had taken multiple victories and podiums and established himself as one of the promising young drivers from Northern Ireland. FIA Formula 3 involves a different level of competition, with a much larger international field, more demanding cars and direct exposure at major Formula 1-support events. Success at a national junior level is useful preparation but does not guarantee points on an international grid.
His Hitech drive therefore represented a genuine graduation in career terms. A qualifying position inside the top six followed by a race finish inside the points gives a more complete picture than either measurement alone. A driver might be quick in qualifying yet struggle in traffic, or collect a race result after a poor one-lap showing. McLaughlin demonstrated speed in both phases over the Silverstone weekend, although the event did not establish that he had solved every aspect of Formula 3 racecraft.
McLaughlin’s first championship points
The 2026 Silverstone F3 weekend was held on one of the country's fastest and most demanding circuits, featuring extended high-speed sequences where confidence, aerodynamics and tyre management all matter. McLaughlin's 0.313-second qualifying gap highlighted the fine margins in the field. The opening championship points then gave him a real result to build on rather than simply promising pace without reward. His progression was measurable and officially recorded.
