Lisburn Belsize Road works: £757,000 scheme and March 2027 end date
The Belsize Road programme starts 19 October with weekday off-peak lane closures, footway improvements and later full closures.
A long-running scheme begins in October
Drivers in Lisburn face several months of roadworks on Belsize Road after the Department for Infrastructure announced a £757,000 improvement programme beginning Monday 19 October 2026. The affected section lies between Kirkwood’s Road and Boomers Road. Alongside carriageway resurfacing, the project includes improvements to kerbs and footways.
The Department’s anticipated substantial completion date is 17 March 2027, subject to favourable weather. This is not a project announced for one weekend only. People who use Belsize Road regularly should expect traffic management to change as different tasks are completed.
Daily lane-closure window
DfI says off-peak lane closures will operate between 9.30am and 4.30pm daily during resurfacing works. These hours are intended to lessen the effect on peak-time movements, but a reduction in available road space can still cause queues outside the immediate works area.
The Department says road closures will also be necessary towards the end of the scheme. Crucially, the initial release does not provide dates for those later full closures or a definitive list of diversions. They should not be presented as confirmed until separately notified.
Carriageway, kerbs and footways
The improvements cover more than the surface cars drive over. Kerbs and footways are specifically part of the announced scheme, meaning construction activity can affect how pedestrians move around the works as well as how vehicles pass through them.
That wider scope matters for families walking locally, people with mobility requirements and anyone accessing property beside the site. It would be premature to claim the finished scheme includes particular new crossings, cycle lanes or permanent traffic restrictions: those have not been specified in the October announcement.
What is known about access
The Department says arrangements have been planned to reduce inconvenience and to accommodate local access, while warning that delays remain possible. That is not a published guarantee that every entrance will be reachable by car at every stage. Where access for a delivery, appointment or care visit is critical, check local traffic notices and any directions from the site team.
Motorists should not treat normal journeys through Belsize Road as entirely unaffected just because the named closures are off-peak. Temporary signals, queues and works vehicles may alter traffic conditions. Drivers should obey temporary speed limits where posted, and leave workers enough room to operate safely.
How this differs from earlier Belsize Road work
DfI also announced a separate £377,000 Belsize Road scheme in March 2022, relating to a different described stretch and dates. It would be a mistake to merge the funding figures or assume that the 2022 work is simply being repeated under the same announcement. The current October 2026 scheme is the £757,000 programme between Kirkwood’s Road and Boomers Road.
Past investments help show that the road has been subject to maintenance over time, but they are not evidence that the new programme results from failure of the previous one. The Department has not supplied that causal assessment.
Planning journeys through winter
Because the scheme is forecast to run into March 2027, drivers should plan for changes across autumn, winter and the early part of spring. The original dates are conditional on weather. Short-notice operational changes are most reliably checked through official traffic notices, not old social-media posts listing a single closure date.
People travelling to work or school can reduce uncertainty by checking the latest status before starting each journey and allowing extra time if route flexibility is limited. If using an alternative route, it is important to respect its posted restrictions and residential character.
The bottom line
The verified facts are the £757,000 value, 19 October start, section between Kirkwood’s Road and Boomers Road, inclusion of footway and kerb work, 9.30am–4.30pm off-peak lane closures and a provisional 17 March 2027 finish. Exact dates of later full closures remain to be published.
