Michael Dunlop completes Cookstown 100 four-timer and breaks Orritor circuit lap record
Michael Dunlop won four races at the 2026 Cookstown 100 meeting on 24–25 April, completing his preparations for the North West 200 and Isle of Man TT with an extraordinary local result. The Ballymoney rider took the opening Open A Invitation contest on Friday, then added Saturday's Moto3, Open and feature Cookstown 100 victories. He also set a new outright lap record around the 2.1-mile Orritor circuit at more than 92mph. The combination of four different victories and a faster circuit record made the meeting more than a routine seasonal warm-up.
The first win came in an interrupted race
Friday's Open A Invitation race ended under a red flag before its planned nine laps had been completed. Dunlop was declared the winner after seven laps, having established an advantage of 9.4 seconds over Michael Sweeney. Riding an MD Racing BMW Superstock machine, he recorded a best speed of 91.322mph, close to the 91.773mph outright mark he had set in 2025. Marcus Simpson was third, followed by Darryl Tweed and Paul Jordan. The result was official, but its shortened distance needs to be stated so it is not confused with a straightforward nine-lap finish.
The Saturday programme then supplied the next three victories. Dunlop won the Moto3 race over nine laps on a Burrows Engineering/RK Racing Honda, finishing 9.8 seconds clear of Dan Sayle, with Chris Meyer third. That result deserves its own detail because the Moto3 machine is entirely different from the powerful Superstock BMW used the previous evening. Winning across those categories calls for adapting to different braking, acceleration and riding demands on the same short, technical course.
A feature-race record capped the weekend
The later Open contest was also affected by a stoppage, and the feature race became the most prominent result of the meeting. Dunlop won while lowering the Orritor circuit's outright lap benchmark into the 92mph range. Contemporary reporting gives a fastest lap of approximately 92.1mph, improving the previous year's 91.773mph record. The feature winning margin to Sweeney was about 8.65 seconds, with Simpson taking third. The exact circuit record is more meaningful than an unqualified statement that a famous rider was quick: it demonstrates measurable improvement from the mark Dunlop already held.
Because the feature used a different class of machine from Moto3, the two winning times should not be treated as interchangeable. A road race meeting includes multiple classifications, and four wins can be achieved in different races under different rules. The BBC confirmed all four victories and the lap-record success, while local reporting provided detail on the opening race and the weekend's order. The victory tally should therefore be linked to the specific races actually contested, not to an invented four-race streak on a single bike.
The road to the North West and TT
Dunlop was a late Cookstown entrant, using the event as an opportunity to race before the larger international road meetings in May and June. The form proved significant: he later won the North West 200 Supersport race and took three victories at the 2026 Isle of Man TT, raising his all-time Mountain Course record to 36 wins. That later success is relevant background, but the Cookstown outcome stands on its own. Four wins and a circuit lap record were accomplished over one sunny weekend on local roads.
