£300,000 Kevlin Road resurfacing scheme starts in Omagh on Monday — full closure times and diversions

A £300,000 resurfacing scheme on Kevlin Road in Omagh begins on Monday 28 September 2026, with almost a month of temporary traffic management planned.

The Department for Infrastructure says the work covers around one kilometre of the C0663 Kevlin Road between Sunningdale and Dergmoney Heights and includes localised drainage improvements as well as carriageway resurfacing.

For drivers, the important part is the timetable. The project involves a mixture of overnight full closures, daytime full closures and lane closures rather than one continuous closure.

Overnight full road closures

Weekday overnight closures are scheduled from 28 September to 16 October and again from 26 October to 29 October.

The published closure period is 8pm to 7am.

Anyone who normally uses Kevlin Road for late-evening or early-morning travel should plan around those dates because the route will not operate as normal during the closure windows.

Daytime full closures

A separate phase of weekday daytime full closures is planned from 19 October to 23 October.

Those closures are scheduled between 9.30am and 3pm, which means school-run and commuter traffic may be outside some of the full-closure period but daytime journeys could still be affected.

Daytime lane closures

DfI also plans weekday lane closures from 28 September to 16 October and again from 26 to 29 October, between 9.30am and 3pm.

So even when the road is not completely closed, drivers should expect slower traffic and temporary controls around the works area.

What is the diversion route?

DfI says signed diversion routes will operate during the full closures. Traffic approaching from the Sunningdale end will be directed using Kevlin Road, Kevlin Avenue, Great Northern Road, Dublin Road Link, Dublin Road, Ballynahatty Road and back to Kevlin Road.

From the Dergmoney Heights side, the signed route runs via Kevlin Road, Ballynahatty Road, Dublin Road, Great Northern Slip Road, Great Northern Road and Kevlin Avenue.

Drivers should follow temporary signage rather than relying solely on satellite navigation, because live roadworks arrangements can differ from the normal route selected by an app.

What about local access?

DfI says local access and egress will be maintained for residents within the works zone, although delays are likely depending on the phase of work.

Traffic from Coolnagard Estate will be redirected from Coolnagard Roundabout to the diversion route as the works progress.

Access to Sacred Heart College is expected to be maintained via Kevlin Avenue and Kevlin Road from the John Street approach, while Townview Avenue is expected to remain accessible from Dublin Road.

How long will the scheme last?

The Department expects the project to be substantially complete by 29 October 2026, subject to favourable weather.

That weather caveat matters with resurfacing work. Heavy rain or other unsuitable conditions can affect the programme, so the final completion date may change if conditions prevent planned work.

Why is the road being resurfaced?

DfI describes the project as a road-improvement scheme combining resurfacing with drainage work. Resurfacing is intended to renew the carriageway surface, while local drainage improvements can address areas where water management needs attention.

The £300,000 figure is the Department's stated investment in the scheme.

What Omagh drivers should do

If Kevlin Road is part of your normal route, note the different phases rather than assuming the same restrictions apply every day. Overnight closures, daytime full closures and lane closures each have different dates and times.

Allow extra travel time, follow the signed diversions and check for updated DfI notices if weather or construction conditions alter the programme.
