2026 Irish Motocross Cadet points revised after rule error affects Tandragee round

The MCUI Motocross Commission has revised the 2026 65cc Cadet championship position after identifying an eligibility-rule error that affected points from Tandragee.

The 2026 Irish Motocross Championship's 65cc Cadet class required a points review after the MCUI Motocross Commission identified an error in the way a new age-eligibility rule had been introduced. The issue directly affected the championship points from the Tandragee round on 22 August.

Motorcycling Ireland published the clarification on 10 September after the commission met on 7 September. The problem centred on a proposed rule limiting Cadet eligibility to riders aged six to eight.

Rule change had not completed the required process

The Motocross Commission had agreed in February to change the Cadet age rule for 2026. However, after the issue was raised by guardians, the commission reviewed the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland constitution and found that an Irish championship rule change required approval at an MCUI Inter Centre meeting.

That approval had not taken place at the relevant 2025 meeting. The commission therefore concluded that the proposed restriction could not validly alter the 2026 championship rules.

Previous rule remains in force

The practical result is that the earlier rule continues to apply for the 2026 season. Under that position, a rider in the 65cc class who is in their first year in the category can compete as a Cadet even if they fall outside the proposed six-to-eight restriction.

Because the incorrect rule had influenced the Tandragee round, the Cadet points from that meeting were removed from the championship totals while the classification was reviewed.

Why the decision matters

Youth motorsport rules have to be especially clear because eligibility can depend on age, experience and class progression. Families plan full seasons around published regulations, and a late interpretation change can affect entries, travel and championship expectations.

The commission's decision is also a reminder that a sporting body cannot simply apply a rule because it intended to introduce it. Championship regulations have to follow the governing body's own approval process.

Northern Ireland connection

Tandragee was one of the venues used by the 2026 Irish Motocross Championship and the affected round gives the story a direct Northern Ireland connection. It also shows how Northern Irish tracks can sit inside all-Ireland championship structures.

Motorcycling Ireland invited families with questions to contact the Motocross Commission directly. Any final championship classification should therefore be checked against the updated official points rather than older tables that may still contain the removed Tandragee score.

Governance is part of sporting fairness

The dispute is a useful example of why motorsport regulation extends beyond what happens on the track. Championship rules determine who can enter, which machinery is legal and how points are awarded. If those rules are altered without the required process, competitors can make decisions based on information that later proves invalid.

For young riders, the consequences can be especially significant because age eligibility changes quickly from season to season. A family may buy machinery, enter meetings and plan travel around a class they expect a rider to contest for the full year.

Why published points can change

Motorsport results are often described as provisional immediately after an event. Technical checks, protests, licence issues or regulatory reviews can all alter the final classification. The Tandragee Cadet issue is a larger example of the same principle: the result on the day and the championship points ultimately awarded are not always identical.

Anyone following the title should therefore use the latest official championship table rather than relying on screenshots or social-media posts from earlier in the season.
