Can a private parking company take me to court in Northern Ireland?

The Consumer Council says operators may choose Small Claims Court when unpaid charges are not resolved. Northern Ireland's small claims process can deal with many money claims up to £5,000 and is part of the County Court system.

If you receive actual court papers, do not treat them like an ordinary debt-recovery letter. Read the response deadline, preserve your evidence and respond through the court process. Possible issues can include whether you were the driver, whether the signs formed clear contractual terms, whether payment was made, whether ANPR evidence is accurate and whether the operator followed its own appeal procedures.

Ignoring a parking company's letters is one decision; ignoring formal court documents is much more serious. A court judgment can lead to enforcement consequences if it is not dealt with.
