Can I appeal a private parking charge because my car broke down?

A genuine breakdown can explain why the driver could not leave within the normal time limit. Keep recovery invoices, garage receipts, photographs, roadside-assistance records or call logs showing what happened and when.

Tell the operator the timeline: when the problem occurred, when assistance was requested and when the vehicle was eventually moved. Specific evidence is more persuasive than simply stating the car was broken.

A breakdown does not automatically cancel every charge, because the operator may consider the site's terms and evidence. But it is a recognised circumstance worth raising promptly. If the site belongs to a retailer, hospital or employer, you can also ask the landowner or occupier to support cancellation where appropriate.

In Northern Ireland, private parking disputes are civil matters and the Consumer Council distinguishes driver liability from registered-keeper status. Always separate a private Parking Charge Notice from an official Penalty Charge Notice because the appeal and enforcement routes are different.
