Do I have to pay a private parking charge in Northern Ireland?

Private parking charges usually arise from the terms displayed at a supermarket, retail park, hospital or other privately managed site. In Northern Ireland, the Consumer Council says the driver is liable for a valid private parking charge; registered keepers are not automatically liable simply because their name is on the V5C.

That does not mean the safest approach is to ignore the letter. Check the signs, times, payment evidence and photographs, then appeal promptly if the charge is wrong or unfair. An operator can continue debt recovery and may bring a Small Claims Court case. If you were the driver and clearly breached properly displayed terms, the operator may have an enforceable contractual claim.

Keep the original notice, receipts, screenshots, photographs and every letter. Those records are useful whether you appeal, negotiate with the landowner or later need to respond to a court claim.
