Breakdown Rules in Northern Ireland
If your vehicle breaks down, your first priority is reducing the danger to yourself, passengers and other road users.
First action
Get the vehicle off the road if possible.
Move the vehicle away from the traffic flow where it is safe and possible to do so.
Warning traffic
Use hazard lights if the vehicle is causing an obstruction.
Hazard warning lights help other road users identify a broken-down vehicle that is creating a hazard or obstruction.
Warning triangle
Place a triangle at least 45 metres behind the vehicle — but never on a motorway.
On an ordinary road, the Highway Code advises placing the triangle at least 45 metres behind the broken-down vehicle on the same side of the road, where it can be done safely.
Never use a warning triangle on a motorway.
Visibility
Keep sidelights on in darkness or poor visibility.
Do not stand between the broken-down vehicle and approaching traffic, and avoid blocking other road users from seeing your vehicle lights.
