GB provisional licences stop being valid for the main NI car and motorcycle test route from 1 October 2026.

This is a significant booking change for people travelling from Great Britain to test in Northern Ireland. The old residency-declaration route for these categories ends.

The change takes effect on 1 October 2026.
It covers Category B car and Category A, A1 and A2 motorcycle theory and practical tests.
To take these tests in Northern Ireland after the change, you need a Northern Ireland provisional licence.

What about a test before 1 October?

A GB provisional holder with a valid residency check may continue to take an eligible test up to 30 September 2026 if all requirements are met. Appointment availability is not guaranteed.

Do not pay a third party promising a workaround

The official guidance says the residency declaration process is no longer available for the affected categories from 1 October. Use DVA/nidirect as the final source before making travel plans.
