Child Car Seat Rules in Northern Ireland
Children normally need the correct child restraint until they reach the relevant age or height threshold.
Main threshold
Children normally need the correct restraint until 135cm or age 12.
Current Northern Ireland guidance requires the correct child restraint up to 135cm in height or the 12th birthday, whichever threshold is reached first.
Under three
Children under three normally need a suitable child restraint.
A limited exception applies in the rear of a taxi or minibus where the correct child restraint is not available.
Rear-facing seats
Never place a rear-facing baby seat in front of an active frontal airbag.
The airbag must be deactivated where the vehicle and seat arrangement allows this.
Responsibility
The driver is responsible for children under 14.
The driver must ensure the correct legal restraint or seat belt is used for children under 14.
