Headlight and Fog Light Rules in Northern Ireland
Know when headlights are required, when fog lights may be used and when they must be switched off again.
Poor visibility
Use headlights when you cannot see for more than about 100 metres.
The Highway Code states that headlights must be used when visibility is seriously reduced, generally where you cannot see for more than around 100 metres.
Fog lights
Fog lights may be used when visibility is seriously reduced.
Front or rear fog lights may be used in seriously reduced visibility, but they must be switched off when visibility improves.
Dazzle
Do not use lights in a way that dazzles others.
Your lights should not dazzle or cause discomfort to drivers, cyclists, pedestrians or horse riders.
Night driving
Headlights are required at night.
Official NI guidance defines night for vehicle-lighting purposes as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise.
