That number is useful as a starting point, but it is not the most important finding. Nearly 43% of the cars in the sample sit between 60,000 and 99,999 miles, while more than one in five are below 30,000 miles. Age, model, price and how the car has been used matter far more than whether its odometer sits above or below a single “average”.

The largest group is therefore 60,000–99,999 miles, not a narrow band around the 57,191-mile average. That is exactly why an average can hide the shape of a used-car market.
Why one “average used-car mileage” number can mislead
A three-year-old car with 60,000 miles and a ten-year-old car with 60,000 miles have completely different usage histories. Likewise, motorway-heavy mileage with documented servicing may tell a different story from lower mileage accumulated through repeated short urban journeys.
Mileage should therefore be considered against at least four things:
- Age: divide the mileage by the car's age to understand annual use.
- Maintenance: check service records, timing-belt or chain requirements, transmission servicing and other age/mileage-related work.
- Condition: inspect tyres, brakes, suspension, interior wear and signs of neglected maintenance.
- Price: compare the car with similar examples of the same model, engine, trim and age rather than with the whole market.
Does a higher asking price mean lower mileage?
Not necessarily. The model-level figures in this sample demonstrate the problem with that assumption. The Volvo XC60 has by far the highest median asking price at £24,950, yet its current average mileage is 56,977 — very close to the overall 57,191-mile sample average. The much cheaper SEAT Ibiza has an average of 54,756 miles.
Price is influenced by model, age, specification, engine, condition, seller type and market demand. Mileage is only one input.
Why this article does not publish “median mileage by price band”
PureCar's public market-guide pages currently expose mileage distributions and price distributions separately. They do not expose the underlying cross-tab needed to prove, for example, the median mileage of all £10,000–£15,000 cars in this four-model sample.
Creating that figure by matching separate totals would be statistically wrong. The honest approach is to report the mileage bands that are actually published and explain where the public data stops.
If PureCar later exposes the listing-level dataset or a price-by-mileage matrix, that analysis can be expanded into exact medians by age and price band.
Model-by-model mileage patterns
SEAT Ibiza
Of 27 current cars, six are under 30,000 miles, nine are between 30,000 and 59,999, ten are between 60,000 and 99,999, and two have passed 100,000 miles. The average is 54,756 miles.
Skoda Octavia
The Octavia has the highest average in this sample at 60,479 miles. Of 48 cars, 21 sit between 60,000 and 99,999 miles and five exceed 100,000 miles.
Skoda Karoq
The Karoq average is 54,655 miles. Fifteen of 33 current cars are in the 60,000–99,999 band, while only one exceeds 100,000 miles.
Volvo XC60
The XC60 average is 56,977 miles. Ten of 39 are below 30,000 miles, 11 are in the 30,000s to 50,000s, 17 are in the 60,000–99,999 band and one exceeds 100,000 miles.
What mileage should you look for when buying a used car?
There is no universal “good mileage”. A buyer should first set the vehicle type, budget and age range, then compare mileage inside that narrower group. A low-mileage car can still be poor value if it has weak history or long periods of neglect; a higher-mileage car can still be attractive if its condition, maintenance and price are strong.
