Belfast car insurance averages more than £900 in 2026 — the highest figure in Northern Ireland

Q2 quote data put Belfast City at £902.71 on average, around £320 above the lowest-cost NI council area in the same sample.

Belfast motorists are facing the highest average car-insurance prices in Northern Ireland in current quote data. CompareNI's Q2 2026 figures put the average annual premium for Belfast City at £902.71.

That compares with £582.63 in Causeway Coast and Glens, the lowest figure in the same council-area table. The gap is more than £320 a year, illustrating how strongly location can affect insurance pricing even within Northern Ireland.

Why does postcode affect car insurance?

Insurers price risk using many factors linked to where a vehicle is kept and used. Claims frequency, theft, vandalism, traffic density, collision patterns and the cost of repairing local claims can all feed into area-based pricing. Two drivers with the same age and model can therefore receive different quotes at different addresses.

That does not mean moving a few streets will automatically save hundreds of pounds, and drivers must always give the genuine address where the vehicle is normally kept.

How Belfast compares with other NI council areas

In CompareNI's Q2 2026 dataset, Belfast was followed by Derry City and Strabane at £680.32, Newry Mourne and Down at £674.85, Lisburn and Castlereagh at £668.02 and Antrim and Newtownabbey at £666.69.

At the lower end, Causeway Coast and Glens averaged £582.63, Ards and North Down £599.40 and Mid and East Antrim £607.13.

These are quote-sample averages, not fixed area tariffs. Individual results can sit well above or below them.

Belfast is particularly expensive for teenagers

The location effect becomes even more dramatic for young drivers. In the same Q2 dataset, a 17-year-old in Belfast averaged £2,480.86, an 18-year-old £2,406.49 and a 19-year-old £2,347.74.

That is why first-car shopping in Belfast should start with insurance quotes, not finish with them. A vehicle that appears affordable at £5,000 can be unrealistic if the annual premium adds another £2,000 or more.

Can parking arrangements change the price?

They can, but not always in the direction people expect. Insurers use their own claims data, so a garage, driveway or street space may be rated differently by different companies. Give the true overnight location and compare quotes rather than changing the answer to chase a lower number.

How to shop more effectively

  • Compare multiple insurers and comparison routes rather than relying on a single renewal.
  • Run quotes on the exact vehicle before buying it.
  • Check annual payment against the total cost of monthly instalments.
  • Consider telematics if the terms suit the driver's real use.
  • Review optional extras and excesses carefully.
  • Keep all personal and address details accurate.

Do not use an average as a personal benchmark

A £902.71 Belfast average does not mean a good quote below that figure is automatically good value or that a quote above it is automatically unfair. Insurance is individual. The useful insight is that Belfast appears materially more expensive than other NI council areas in the current sample, making comparison especially important for city drivers.

For households running two or more cars, even a modest saving on each renewal can become meaningful. In a market where regional averages are this high, spending an hour comparing cover can have a better return than many smaller car-running savings.
