Lisburn A3 Moira Road to close on two November weekends during £505,000 scheme

A £505,000 resurfacing project on the A3 Moira Road includes weekday off-peak work and two separately timed weekend closures.

Drivers using Lisburn's A3 Moira Road face two separately scheduled weekend closures this month as a £505,000 resurfacing programme moves through a busy local route.

The Department for Infrastructure says work began on Monday 2 November between Lissue Road and Dagger Road. Weekday resurfacing is being arranged outside peak commuting hours, but two sections of the programme require more substantial closures on 14–15 and 29 November.

The exact locations and times matter. The weekday works and the weekend restrictions do not cover identical stretches at identical hours, and a headline saying simply that Moira Road will be closed throughout November would be inaccurate.

Weekday works and their limits

The Department's published programme places weekday resurfacing between Rathdown Road and Dagger Road, normally from 9.30am until 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

That schedule is intended to limit disruption during the main commuter periods, although it does not guarantee free-flowing traffic outside the working window. Vehicles arriving just before a restriction ends may still encounter queues, and other unrelated works can affect nearby roads.

Motorists should distinguish the broader project area — Lissue Road to Dagger Road — from the weekday section where the Department has specified the active resurfacing programme.

The project aims to improve carriageway condition rather than create a new road alignment. The £505,000 is a scheme budget, not an announced cost of a single weekend closure.

First weekend closure: 14–15 November

The first substantial closure is scheduled from 7pm on Saturday 14 November until 7pm on Sunday 15 November.

It will affect the A3 Moira Road between Lissue Road and Rathdown Road.

That is a 24-hour period crossing Saturday evening and most of Sunday. A driver relying on normal Sunday access should not assume the carriageway will reopen in the morning simply because weekday work usually finishes at 4.30pm.

The department has published a signed diversion involving the A3, A26, A30 Glenavy Road, Ballymacash Road, Prince William Road and Knockmore Road.

Diversion routes may appear indirect compared with a driver's usual journey. The relevant route is the one officially signposted, not necessarily the shortest line on a sat-nav display.

Second closure: Sunday 29 November

The second closure is scheduled for Sunday 29 November, from 7am to 7pm, again between Lissue Road and Rathdown Road.

This is a 12-hour Sunday closure, not a repeat of the first weekend's 24-hour schedule.

Drivers who must use the road on both weekends should treat them as separate events. The dates, opening times and potential delays are not interchangeable.

The Department currently expects substantial completion by Monday 30 November, subject to favourable weather. That leaves a short gap between the second planned closure and the intended completion date, making a final travel check particularly sensible if conditions are poor.

Impact on residents, businesses and through traffic

Moira Road serves a mix of local access and longer journeys through Lisburn. Temporary restrictions can affect shopping, work, deliveries and visits even when the road remains open at other times.

The Department says it has taken steps to accommodate local access. But access may be managed differently during active surfacing operations, and a business remaining accessible does not mean every vehicle can pass through a closed section unhindered.

The diversion may also place more traffic on roads that are not normally used for the same volume of through journeys. The official notice does not quantify expected additional travel time, so it would be misleading to promise motorists a particular delay.

Other traffic schemes listed by PureCar in Lisburn may overlap with the dates of the A3 works. A useful route decision therefore involves checking the whole journey, not only the stretch being resurfaced.

What the announcement confirms — and what it does not

The confirmed facts are a £505,000 project, weekday off-peak resurfacing between Rathdown and Dagger roads, a 24-hour closure between Lissue and Rathdown on 14–15 November, and a shorter closure on 29 November.

The Department has not said the entire A3 from Lissue Road to Dagger Road will be closed continuously for the rest of the month. It has also not provided a guaranteed reopening time independent of weather and operational changes.

For now, motorists should plan around the two published weekends, follow the signed diversion, and check official traffic information shortly before leaving. The biggest avoidable mistake would be assuming that the weekday schedule also applies during the Sunday closures.
