Northern Ireland car insurance jumps to £664 in 2026: what the latest premium data shows

Quote data for the second quarter of 2026 put the average Northern Ireland premium at £664.26, up 6.4% in a quarter and behind only London and the West Midlands.

Car insurance remains one of the biggest ownership costs facing Northern Ireland motorists, and fresh 2026 quote data suggests the pressure has moved upwards again. CompareNI's Q2 2026 analysis put the average annual premium in Northern Ireland at £664.26, up from £624.60 in the first quarter.

That is a quarter-on-quarter increase of 6.4%. In the same comparison, Northern Ireland remained among the most expensive UK regions for motor cover, behind London and the West Midlands.

Why an average is only a starting point

The £664 figure is based on a large sample of quotes rather than a guaranteed price for any individual driver. Your actual premium can move dramatically according to age, postcode, occupation, mileage, claims history, convictions, vehicle, parking arrangements, excess and the cover options selected.

That variation is especially important in Northern Ireland because the same data shows large gaps between council areas and age groups. A safe middle-aged driver in one town can face a completely different market from a 19-year-old in Belfast.

How does Northern Ireland compare with the rest of the UK?

CompareNI's Q2 table listed London at £833.03 and the West Midlands at £690.91, with Northern Ireland at £664.26. Scotland was £530.54 and Wales £501.12 in the same dataset.

Those figures do not prove that every NI driver pays more than every Scottish or Welsh driver. They show the average of the sampled quotes in each region and are useful for understanding the broad market rather than predicting an individual renewal.

Why can premiums rise even when you have not claimed?

Insurance pricing is based on expected risk and cost, not just your own recent claims. Repair costs, vehicle values, parts prices, labour, theft patterns, personal-injury costs and the wider claims environment can all influence what insurers charge.

That is why a driver can have another claim-free year and still receive a higher renewal quote. It is also why simply accepting the renewal without comparison can be expensive.

What should NI drivers do at renewal?

  • Start comparing before the renewal date rather than on the final day.
  • Check that mileage, occupation, address and vehicle details are accurate.
  • Compare the total annual cost, not only a monthly payment.
  • Review compulsory and voluntary excesses so you understand what you would actually pay after a claim.
  • Do not strip away cover you genuinely need just to produce a lower headline price.

Can changing the car make a big difference?

Yes. For younger drivers in particular, insurance can be the deciding factor between two otherwise similar used cars. Engine performance, repair costs, theft risk and insurance-group factors can make a modestly priced hatchback surprisingly expensive to insure.

If you are buying a car, obtain real quotes on the exact registration before paying a deposit. Do not assume that a smaller engine or lower purchase price automatically means cheaper cover.

What about telematics?

For some young drivers, telematics or black-box policies can reduce the initial premium by allowing the insurer to price around measured driving behaviour. They are not automatically best for everyone because mileage limits, curfews, scoring and policy conditions vary. Compare the actual contract, not just the first-year number.

The useful number is your own market price

The £664.26 average is valuable because it shows where the NI market was sitting in Q2 2026. But the number that matters to an individual household is the best suitable quote available for its own driver, car and circumstances. Treat the regional average as a warning to shop carefully, not as a target price you should expect to pay.
