Northern Ireland's public EV charging network is undergoing a major upgrade, with ESB saying its current programme will replace older infrastructure, double the number of rapid chargers and introduce five 200kW high-power charging hubs.
The work is supported by £3.27 million from the UK Levelling Up Fund alongside ESB investment. For existing EV owners, the practical significance is less about a headline number of chargers and more about replacing ageing 22kW and 50kW equipment with faster, more capable hardware.
What is being replaced?
ESB says the programme will replace its existing legacy fast 22kW and rapid 50kW chargers across Northern Ireland with newer technology. The company describes the work as a transformation of the public-charging experience rather than simply adding chargers beside old units.
Reliability will matter as much as outright speed. A 200kW label is little use if a driver cannot start a session, so network modernisation needs both hardware and dependable operation.
Where will the 200kW hubs go?
ESB says five high-power 200kW hubs are being delivered in strategic locations. Drivers should use the network's live map for commissioned sites and current availability rather than assuming every planned hub is already open.
High-power hubs can charge multiple vehicles simultaneously, which can reduce queuing compared with a single-charger site.
Will every EV charge at 200kW?
No. The charger advertises the maximum power the unit can provide under suitable conditions; the car decides how much it can accept. Many older EVs peak well below 200kW, and even a modern car's charge rate falls as the battery fills or when battery temperature is not ideal.
An EV with a 100kW maximum does not become a 200kW-charging car simply because it plugs into a faster unit.
What does ESB mean by 100km in six minutes?
ESB says its high-power hubs can provide a compatible EV with up to 100km of range in as little as six minutes. That is a best-case capability statement, not a promise for every vehicle or every charging session.
Actual added range depends on the vehicle's charging curve, efficiency, battery temperature, starting state of charge and the power being delivered.
How much does high-power charging cost?
From July 2026, ESB's Northern Ireland tariff lists rapid/high-power charging at 70p/kWh for members, 74p/kWh on pay as you go and 75p/kWh for contactless one-time payment. Overstay charges can also apply after the published time threshold.
That means faster charging should be judged on both time and energy cost. Drivers with home charging will often still want to do most routine charging at home and use high-power sites for longer journeys.
Why this upgrade matters for used EV buyers
Public-charging confidence affects whether an EV works for households without a driveway and for drivers making regular long journeys. A larger rapid network cannot solve every charging concern, but replacing legacy equipment and increasing high-power capacity addresses two common complaints: speed and availability.
Check the live network, not the plan
Infrastructure programmes roll out over time. Before buying an EV on the assumption that a particular route is covered, check the live ESB map and other charging networks you expect to use. Planned hubs are useful context; commissioned chargers are what matter on the day you travel.
