Northern Ireland's 2026 motor-industry finalists reveal how big the local dealer sector really is

More than 115 entries, 22 competitive categories and finalists ranging from national-style groups to small independents: the 2026 NI Motor Industry Awards shortlist is a useful snapshot of the local trade.

Northern Ireland's motor trade can look fragmented from the outside: a mix of large dealer groups, long-established franchises, family-run independents and small specialists spread across towns that are rarely more than an hour or two apart.

The newly announced finalists for the 2026 Northern Ireland Motor Industry Awards put some scale on that market. Organisers say this year's awards received more than 115 entries, with finalists shortlisted across 22 competitive categories. The awards website says Northern Ireland has more than 650 new and used vehicle retailers.

The shortlist shows how broad the dealer market is

The Dealer Group category has SERE Motors and Shelbourne Motors shortlisted. The Franchised Dealer category includes Pat Kirk Ltd, Roadside Garages and Saltmarine Cars.

The independent side is much larger. The Large Independent Dealer shortlist includes CarBrothersNI, Family Cars NI, Fleetwise, K. Car Sales, iGen Autos, O'Loughlin Bros and MB Motors. Medium and small independent categories add another long list of businesses from across Northern Ireland.

That matters because the NI car market is not dominated by one single format. A buyer might move between a major franchise, a large used-car supermarket-style operator and a small specialist during the same search.

Used-car competition is particularly strong

The Used Vehicle Dealer category includes CarBrothersNI, Family Cars NI, iGen Autos, K. Car Sales, Magee Automotive, MB Motors, O'Loughlin Bros and Saltmarine Cars.

For buyers, competition is generally positive: it pushes dealers to improve stock presentation, response times, warranties and aftersales. For dealers, it means being 'local' is no longer enough on its own. Customers compare price, finance, reviews, photography and availability online before they ever arrive on a forecourt.

EV retail has become its own category

The 2026 EV Dealer finalists are Greg Mitchell Motors, SERE Motors and Shelbourne Motors. That category is interesting because Northern Ireland's consumer data still shows relatively low EV ownership and softer purchase intent than a year earlier.

In other words, dealers are having to build EV expertise before the mass market is fully convinced. That means explaining charging, battery warranty, range, home-charging practicalities and used values rather than simply putting an electric car on the forecourt.

The awards are increasingly about people, not just premises

The shortlist includes categories for dealer principals, sales managers, aftersales managers, sales teams, technicians, rising stars, apprentices and inspirational women in the industry.

That reflects how much a dealership experience still depends on individuals even though car shopping begins online. A fast reply, accurate description or knowledgeable technician can matter more to the customer than the size of the showroom.

What this says about Northern Ireland's motor trade

There are three clear takeaways.

  1. The independent sector is deep. The number of businesses across large, medium and small dealer categories shows how many NI buyers still purchase outside the major franchise groups.
  2. Digital presentation is becoming part of the product. Dealers are competing before the first phone call, through stock feeds, websites, photography, reviews and response speed.
  3. Aftersales and technical skill still matter. The dedicated service, technician and apprentice categories underline that selling the car is only one part of the business.

Why a marketplace benefits from dealer variety

A useful used-car marketplace should not only show stock from the biggest dealer groups. The strength of Northern Ireland's market is the mixture: a buyer looking for a nearly-new EV may want a franchised group, while someone hunting a rare performance car or inexpensive first car may find it at an independent.

PureCar is built around that wider market. Buyers can search used cars from dealers and sellers, while the motoring business directory gives local garages and automotive businesses another place to be found.

When are the winners announced?

The 2026 Northern Ireland Motor Industry Awards are scheduled for Friday 6 November 2026 at the Crowne Plaza in Belfast. The organisers say the event is now in its fourth year.

The shortlist itself is more useful than a trophy count for understanding the market. It shows a local industry with hundreds of retailers and a surprisingly large range of businesses competing for the same NI motorist.
