Motorway Rules in Northern Ireland
Motorways have additional rules because traffic travels faster and certain road users and vehicles are prohibited.
Some road users must not use motorways.
The NI Highway Code prohibits motorway use by groups including pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, holders of provisional car or motorcycle licences, motorcycles under 50cc and certain slow-moving or agricultural vehicles.
The ordinary maximum for cars is 70 mph.
You must not exceed 70 mph for an ordinary car, or any lower maximum applying to your vehicle or a temporary or permanent signed restriction.
Never reverse or turn around.
If you miss an exit, continue to the next suitable junction. The Highway Code states that you must not reverse, cross the central reservation or drive against the traffic flow.
Do not stop except where permitted in an emergency.
You must not stop on the carriageway, hard shoulder, slip road, central reservation or verge except in specified emergency or official-control situations.
