Seat Belt Rules in Northern Ireland
Seat belts must normally be worn where fitted. Responsibility changes depending on the age of the passenger.
General rule
Use a seat belt if one is fitted.
Northern Ireland law requires a seat belt to be used where one is fitted unless a recognised exemption applies.
Children
The driver is responsible for passengers under 14.
The driver must ensure children under 14 use the legally required seat belt or appropriate child restraint.
Older passengers
Passengers aged 14 and over are responsible for themselves.
A passenger aged 14 or over must wear a seat belt where required and is responsible for complying with the rule.
Exemptions
Some limited exemptions exist.
Examples include specified reversing situations, certain short-distance goods-vehicle deliveries, some licensed taxi situations and properly certified medical exemptions.
