Towing Rules in Northern Ireland
Towing changes your vehicle length, braking, acceleration and legal speed limits. Your licence and vehicle also limit what you may tow.
Do not tow more than your licence permits.
Your driving-licence entitlement limits the vehicle and trailer combination you may legally drive. Check your actual licence categories before towing.
The vehicle manufacturer also sets a towing limit.
Do not exceed the towing weight recommended for the vehicle. This information is normally shown in the handbook, specifications or vehicle plate.
Towing has lower standard speed limits.
Unless signs require a lower speed, a car towing a caravan or trailer must not exceed 30 mph in built-up areas, 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways or motorways.
Avoid the right-hand lane on motorways with three or more lanes.
The Highway Code says the right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes should not be used by a vehicle drawing a trailer.
Secure and distribute the load correctly.
Loads must be secured and must not project dangerously. Weight should be distributed correctly and manufacturer limits for the tow ball and trailer should not be exceeded.
