Traffic Light Rules in Northern Ireland
Understand what red, amber, green and filter-arrow signals mean and what to do when traffic lights are not working.
Red
Red means stop behind the stop line.
You must not move forward over the white stop line while the red light is showing.
Red and amber
Red and amber still means stop.
Do not move off until the green signal shows.
Green
Green means you may proceed only if the way is clear.
A green light does not give permission to block the junction. Proceed only where there is room to clear it safely.
Amber
Amber normally means stop.
You may continue only if you have already crossed the stop line or are so close to it that stopping could cause a collision.
Failure
Treat failed traffic lights like an unmarked junction.
If traffic lights are not working, proceed with great care and treat the junction as an unmarked junction.
