Check every indicator and the hazard warning lights.
Brake lights
Make sure all brake lights illuminate correctly.
Rear and number-plate lights
Check rear lamps and registration-plate lighting.
Windscreen
Look for significant chips, cracks or anything obstructing the driver's view.
Wipers
Make sure the wipers clear the windscreen properly without badly smearing.
Washers
Top up washer fluid and confirm the jets spray the windscreen.
Mirrors
Check required mirrors are present, secure and provide a usable view.
Tyre condition
Look for cuts, bulges, obvious damage or badly worn tyres.
Tyre tread
Check the tyres have sufficient legal tread across the required area.
Wheels
Check for obvious damage and missing or visibly loose wheel fixings.
Seatbelts
Check seatbelts latch, release and retract normally.
Horn
Make sure the horn operates normally.
Warning lights
Investigate ABS, airbag, brake, steering and other warning lights that remain illuminated.
Registration plates
Make sure the plates are secure, readable and not badly damaged.
Doors, bonnet and boot
Check doors, bonnet and boot close and secure properly.
Bodywork
Look for dangerous sharp edges, loose panels or serious visible corrosion.
Brakes
Do not ignore pulling, grinding, vibration or unusual braking behaviour.
Steering and suspension
Investigate excessive play, knocking noises or poor steering behaviour.
Exhaust
Check for obvious exhaust damage, excessive noise or unusual smoke.
Fluid leaks
Investigate substantial oil, fuel, brake-fluid or other obvious leaks.
Clear unnecessary luggage
Keep the boot and other areas accessible for inspection.
Vehicle condition
Present the vehicle clean enough for the examiner to inspect it properly.
Allow enough time
Check your booking and arrive before the appointment rather than at the last minute.
