Position for Normal Stops on the Northern Ireland driving test

When asked to pull up, the place and final position should be safe, legal and convenient.

What the examiner is assessing

Choose a suitable location, check mirrors before slowing and finish close enough to the edge without creating an obstruction or hazard.

The category does not determine the grade by itself.A mistake can be recorded differently depending on the circumstances, repetition and level of risk. One serious or dangerous fault fails the test, while 16 or more driving faults also results in a fail.

Stopping too close to a junction or where visibility is restricted.

Finishing unnecessarily far from the kerb or braking harshly because the location was chosen too late.

How to improve before the next test

  1. On lessons, identify one place you would accept and one you would reject before stopping.
  2. Practise progressive braking and final positioning separately.
