Reverse to the Left or Right on the Northern Ireland driving test

Reversing manoeuvres require very low speed, accurate steering and continuous observation.

What the examiner is assessing

You should make effective all-round observations, show consideration to other road users and keep reasonable control of distance from the kerb.

The category does not determine the grade by itself.A mistake can be recorded differently depending on the circumstances, repetition and level of risk. One serious or dangerous fault fails the test, while 16 or more driving faults also results in a fail.

Watching mainly one mirror and failing to notice a pedestrian or vehicle.

Going too fast, mounting the kerb or swinging excessively wide.

How to improve before the next test

  1. Practise stopping whenever observation is blocked or another road user approaches.
  2. Use a walking pace so steering corrections remain small and controlled.
