Private practice can be extremely useful when it supports structured professional instruction rather than replacing it. Under GDL, supervising drivers also have a role in recording and signing off Programme of Training modules.
The supervising driver must be at least 21.
They must have held a suitable full car licence for at least three years.
The supervisor needs a suitable full licence for the type of car being driven.
The learner must be properly insured and the vehicle must be roadworthy and display L plates.
Agree with the ADI what skill should be practised rather than inventing a completely separate method.
Vary roads, traffic, weather and time of day gradually as the learner becomes ready for them.
Keep instructions short and early. Avoid last-second commands that create pressure.
Finish with a short review: what went well, what needs instructor input and what to practise next.
DVA says each Programme of Training module must be completed, recorded in the Logbook and signed off by a supervising driver or approved instructor, with a final sign-off before the practical test. The learner remains responsible for completing the Programme and official Logbook.
A learner driver can only undertake motorway driving with an Approved Driving Instructor. A parent or other private supervising driver cannot take a learner onto a motorway for practice.
