Theory test change

NI motorcycle theory tests move from a written case study to video scenarios.

From 29 October 2026, video clips replace the written case study in the multiple-choice part of car and motorcycle theory tests. The overall multiple-choice question count, time and pass mark remain unchanged.

The change begins on 29 October 2026.

A video scenario can last up to 30 seconds and is followed by three questions.

The multiple-choice section remains 50 questions in 57 minutes with 43 needed to pass.

What the video questions test

The official examples focus on applying knowledge to realistic conditions such as a town centre or country road. You can replay and navigate the video using the test controls.

Hazard perception is separate

The hazard-perception part of the theory test is not being replaced by this change. The new scenario forms part of the multiple-choice section.
