Reverse Parking on the Northern Ireland Driving Test

Reverse parking is one of the reversing exercises that may be selected in the Northern Ireland car test. It can be carried out on-road or into a parking bay.

Why this matters on the NI test

The manoeuvre tests slow-speed control, all-round observation and your ability to finish in a safe, reasonable position.

NI-specific noteDVA lists reverse parking, either on-road or into a parking bay, as one of the reversing exercises that may be selected during the current NI car test.

What good driving looks like

Use these as practice priorities rather than a rigid scripted routine.

Move slowly enough that you can stop immediately if the situation changes.

Keep checking all around, not only the mirror or reference point you are using.

Pause when pedestrians, cyclists or vehicles enter the area of risk.

Correct the position calmly if necessary rather than continuing into a poor final position.

Common problems to work on

These are practical weaknesses worth fixing before test day. The exact fault grade always depends on the circumstances and severity.

!

Staring at one mirror and losing awareness of the wider area.

!

Reversing too quickly to respond to a developing hazard.

!

Mounting the kerb or finishing significantly out of position.

!

Continuing when another road user enters the manoeuvring space.

How to practise it

Build adaptability instead of repeating one memorised road or reference point.

  1. Practise both on-road reverse parking and bay parking because either form may be used.
  2. Repeat with different starting distances so you do not depend on one memorised reference point.
  3. Ask your instructor to walk around the vehicle at random moments so you practise stopping immediately.
  4. Finish by checking whether the car is secure and sensibly positioned.

Keep building your practical-test readiness
