How to practise independent driving practice for the ni driving test in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland independent-driving preparation: following signs or directions, asking for clarification and dealing with wrong turns.

The exercise is designed to assess your ability to make safe decisions without step-by-step prompting.

Useful points to focus on
  • Follow traffic signs or the directions given, but prioritise safe driving over getting the route exactly right.
  • You can ask the examiner to repeat a direction if you are unsure.
  • Taking a wrong turn does not by itself fail the test; any fault depends on how you drive.
  • A sat nav is not used for the NI independent-driving section.
