How can I plan a Mourne Mountains drive without accidentally taking a walking-only trail?
Use named public roads and vehicle entrances, not trail names, as your navigation destinations.
The Newcastle, Castlewellan, Rostrevor, Hilltown and Kilkeel sides of the Mournes lead to different parking areas and viewpoints. A walking trail can start behind a locked gate or at a small car park, so it is not always suitable as a satnav endpoint. For example, Silent Valley visitors enter on Head Road, while Castlewellan Forest Park has a signed entrance in Castlewellan.
