Which main road goes from Belfast to Newcastle in County Down?

The A24 is the recognised Belfast-to-Newcastle road corridor, running south through places such as Carryduff and Ballynahinch.

Discover Northern Ireland specifically identifies the A24 as a main route from Belfast towards Newcastle. Follow the signed destination instead of relying on a vague “Mournes” satnav search, which can direct you to a different mountain access point. On summer weekends, allow for town-centre and coastal congestion rather than treating published estimated journey times as guaranteed.
