Which side of Strangford Lough should I drive on if I do not want to take the ferry?

Strangford Lough is long and narrow, and driving between Strangford and Portaferry without the ferry requires going around the northern end of the lough through the Ards area.

The car ferry crosses the narrows at the southern end, shortening many local journeys when it is operating. If you decide not to sail, set your route planner to avoid ferries and check the full road distance before travelling. Do not assume there is a road bridge beside the ferry terminals.
