R plate rules are changing under Northern Ireland GDL.

From 1 October 2026, newly qualified drivers under GDL display R plates for two years rather than the current 12-month period.

First six months

The first stage includes age-related passenger and night-time protections. Check the official guidance for exemptions and how the restrictions apply to your age and circumstances.

Do not rely on old R-plate advice

There is a transition from the old one-year system to the new GDL system. Always check which scheme applies to the date your entitlement and test fall under.
